Capturing Love
Dearest bloggers, readers, followers, visitors,
On this lovely Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be appropriate to share with you my favorite photograph of all time. But first, I must share with you the story that accompanies it.
Photography is in my blood…literally. My great-aunt and Dad were both photographers, and I’m so blessed to have my dad as a mentor in my photographic aspirations. I adore looking through old photo albums and briefcases filled with raw prints of his pictures. Each one conveys something vibrant and beautiful, a feeling or emotion that practically leaps out of the photograph. In a time before digital photography, he was able to cultivate the art of getting the perfect picture in one, maybe two, tries. I admire both of these skills so much.
My favorite photo is one that conveys love. It is one that had to be taken in one try, or else it would not have captured the right reaction. This photograph tells the story of my dad & mom’s engagement.
One February evening, my dad took my mom to Malibu beach so that they could take pictures. He often used her as his subject in photos, so this outing was seemingly nothing out of the ordinary. They arrived at the beach during golden hour, prime time for taking beautiful pictures. My dad set up his tripod and camera, and then posed my mom. He set the camera on timer, so that he would be in the picture with my mom, ran behind her, put his arms around her, and revealed to her a gorgeous engagement ring, just in time for the camera to take the picture and capture her reaction. He succeeded in capturing love.
I love every little thing about this picture, and I love my parents. I love their love for each other, and their love for me and my siblings. So much love. :)
I hope you all have a marvelous Valentine’s Day! Cherish those you love, and those who love you.
Yours truly,
Caroline
